How does pregnancy change the body and can a mommy makeover repair the damage?
As a mother of two young boys myself, I am intimately aware of the changes that happen to a woman’s body following pregnancy and breast feeding and the affect they can have on your self-esteem. The breasts and abdomen are two areas that are significantly affected by pregnancy. When the abdomen expands to accommodate a growing baby, skin and muscles stretch out and the abdominal muscles can separate, leaving a gap between them (“diastasis”) where abdominal contents pushes outward. No amount of exercise can close that gap or tighten loose skin. The breasts are affected by hormonal changes and milk production. Even in women who don’t breast feed, the breasts lose volume, sag, and can develop stretch marks. A “mommy makeover” is a combination of procedures designed to rejuvenate the breasts and abdomen – and sometimes other areas – to get you back to your pre-baby body. Some women even think they look better after a mommy-makeover than they ever did before childbirth.
What is a mommy makeover?
Mommy-makeovers include a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), sometimes combined with liposuction, and a breast rejuvenation procedure which can include a breast lift, breast reduction, and/or breast augmentation. A tummy tuck involves removal of skin in the lower abdomen and bringing the abdominal muscles back together. This makes the abdomen appear more flat with a more defined waist and tighter skin. Regarding the breast surgery, some women are only looking to restore fullness with an implant whereas others want to correct sagging with a lift. Another group of women has increased breast volume after childbirth and they experience significant relief of back pain and bra-strap grooving after breast reduction.
Is it safe to undergo these procedures?
Abdominal and breast rejuvenation procedures are very commonly combined and safe to perform together. Safety (hyperlink) is of utmost importance to us at Blue Water Plastic Surgery Partners. Our operating room is certified by both AAAASF and JCAHO which means our facility maintains the highest standards of safety and risk prevention and we are continually monitored to make sure we exceed their requirements. We work only with Board certified anesthesiologists because they have the highest level of training. Each patient receives one-on-one care with the undivided attention of our OR staff and the anesthesiologist during their entire procedure.
Does mommy makeover include labiaplasty?
For some women, a mommy makeover may include labiaplasty or other vaginal tightening procedure. Some women are bothered by the appearance of their labia or complain of painful intercourse and difficulty wearing tight-fitting clothing due to elongated labia. For these women, labiaplasty is one way to address these concerns. Almost all women, but especially moms, would like to strengthen and tighten their pelvic floor. We include Emsella (link), a non-invasive treatment to strengthen the pelvic floor, at no additional charge for all of our Mommy Makeover patients. We want you to feel your absolute best in every way after surgery.
What kind of results should I expect?
Your result should be natural looking and will make you feel comfortable and confident in your own skin. You will look like the best version of yourself, but no one will need to know you’ve had any help unless you want to share. I have met some women who jokingly tell me their belly button doesn’t matter. They say they never plan on wearing a two-piece swimsuit again and they just want to look better in clothes. My goal is for every woman to look great in a bikini! I want you to have a beautiful, natural looking abdomen with no visible scars, a smaller waist, and smooth contours. Likewise, my goal is for breasts to look and feel natural out of clothing, and to move naturally both in and out of clothes. I love hearing that so many of my patients actually find themselves confidently wearing a two-piece swimsuit after surgery.
What is the recovery like?
You want a natural looking and beautiful result with the fastest and most comfortable recovery possible, especially when you have people at home who depend on you. At Blue Water Plastic Surgery Partners, we treat all patients like we would treat members of our own family. Our goal is for each patient to leave the OR pain free with a smile on their face. Post-operatively, we use evidence-based rapid recovery protocols to allow you to return to your regular activities as soon as possible. We encourage an active recovery from day one, with gradual increase to full effort.
When should I have it done?
For most women, I usually recommend having a mommy-makeover after bodyweight has stabilized or a minimum of three months after finishing breastfeeding.
